Why should User Experience (UX) Designers and Product Teams care about data?

When I first meet people and tell them I am a UX Designer their first impressions usually are that I have a this "innate superpower" of user knowledge, or that I know how to make the "perfect product" that has wow and perfectly navigable for what the user wants.

Let me break it to  you.

While we like to believe we are superheroes, our secret is that we are gaining our superpower knowledge through data.

There are two types of data:

1. Quantitative: Measurable /countable information collecting from the use of your application.

2. Qualitative: Narrative data that can be obtained by directly talking-to customers, using ethnographic studies, or by performing interviews, usability studies, surveys', etc.

These two types of data go hand in hand. Together, they can show you the whole answer to one of your problems:

  • Why do they use or not use certain feature?
  • Why is a customer's return rate so high or low?
  • Why is the time spent long or short?

This data enables UX Designers and Product Teams to meet their KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) as a team.

KPI's of a product team:

  • User Experience: Increase customer satisfaction, optimize versions, create workflow improvements.
  • Customer Success: Retain customers , increase renewals, drive adoption, develop coverage models.
  • Product Management: Streamline roadmaps, decrease costs, feature prioritization.
  • Marketing: Customer upsell and/or cross sell, in-app marketings, industry campaigns.
  • Dev ops: Reduce resource costs.
  • Tech Writers: Increase customer satisfaction, guide and assist through documentation.
  • Training:  Increase time to value,  focused training .
  • Tech Support: Proactive issue detection,  faster issue resolution, improved knowledge base

Product data drives all of these outcomes, so to get your "superpower" results for your organization, be a data enabler for UX Teams and Product Teams so they have the insight that will make a difference.
